Intimate flamenco at Peña Pachamama
By Rachel Howard
Carolina Lugo is one of the top flamenco artists in San Francisco, celebrating 20 years of her troupe, Ballet Flamenco, in 2016. She and her elegant daughter Carolé Acuña have been performing together at Peña Pachamama, a onetime speakeasy in North Beach, for a quarter of that time and feel the experience can’t be matched for intimacy and flamenco authenticity. For this summer’s run of Saturday shows, they’re tapping a series of passionate musicians, including the stirring young singer Azriel Goldschmidt, along with Bay Area flamenco fixtures Roberto Zamora and Kati Mejia. Guest dancers from Acuña’s troupe, Acuña Danza Teatro, also drop in to churn the fires.
