Brisas de España
is recognized as one of the top Flamenco & Spanish Dance Company's in the
America's. The uniqueness of Brisas de España emanates from the
combination of Flamenco & Spanish dance presented on stage by Artistic
Director, Carolina Lugo. Her artistic vision which brings top
international Flamenco artists from Spain and abroad to grace the stage
with her and her company, interweaves the extraordinary talents of
these artists with melodic palates of musical virtuosity and colorful
step design with the clever staging of dancers and musicians
interlacing rhythms with one another to create a colorful canvas of
artists on stage. The Company is a non-profit organization chartered to share the rich traditions of dance, music, literature and culture of Spain with all communities, and to be a center, which encourages new artistic creativity within the framework of the Iberian-Hispano experience. The Company represents a diversity of cultures from around the globe, appearing in a broad spectrum of creative mediums, including, television, dinner theater, cabaret venues, opera and symphonic formats. Contra Costa Times veteran dance critic, Marilyn Tucker said, "Lugo who earned her Spanish Dance stripes early on with veteran performer Lola Montes, proves herself adapt in choreographing story dances based on the traditions of classical court dances... pure dance poetry." America has a long tradition of Spanish Dance
performances with orchestrations. Drawing on Flamenco, Classical
Ballet, Regional and
School dance roots. Neo-classical Spanish dance developed through the
genius of the Argentine-born Spanish dancer, La Argentina, who was the
first to dance to the music of leading Spanish composers,
such as Isaac Albeniz and Manuel de Falla. Antonio Triana was La
Argentina's dance partner and collaborator and later mentor and dance
partner for Lola Montes who passed on the legacy of these
traditions to Carolina Lugo. The Company has averaged more than 30 performances per year over the last thirteen years. The Company has performed its annual home concert season of traditional Flamenco & Spanish dance, song, and music at the Dean Lesher Theatre in Walnut Creek over the last twelve years. 2011 marks the fourteenth Anniversary Concert Season for Brisas and the company will present their dance season in San Francisco and at the Dean Lesher Theater in Walnut Creek. Brisas has been presented in concert at the Fox Theater, Redwood City, Flint Center, Cupertino, San Mateo Performing Arts Center, Pioneer Center, Reno, Nevada, Luther Burbank Center, Santa Rosa, Eureka Theater, San Francisco, Village Theater, Danville, Marin Center, San Rafael, Mendocino Music Festival, Dean Lesher Performing Arts Center, Walnut Creek, the Varsity Theater, Davis, Wente Winery, Stony Ridge Winery in Livermore and the Memorial Auditorium , Sacramento. In 1999, Carolina was a featured guest artist along with her Company and performed with the Eagles at Stars to The Rescue concert for Tony La Russa’s Animal Rescue Foundation and in 2001 with Michael Bolton at the Paramount Theatre in Oakland. The Company performs in night clubs, dinner theater formats throughout the San Francisco Bay Area and on the West Coast. The company frequently performs at corporate and fundraising events for such organizations as the Peninsula Symphony, The American Cancer Society, California Symphony, Leukemia Society, Lawrence Livermore Lab, Camillia Symphony, National Association of Realtors, UC Davis Retirement Alumni Association and many others. Ms. Lugo has received a great deal of recognition over the last fifteen years. Since 2000, Carolina and her company have been sponsored by the California Arts Council, Zellerbach Family Foundation, Dean and Margaret Lesher Foundation and the Town of Danville, California Alliance For Traditional Arts since 2005 and in 2007 from the Fort Mason Foundation. She is recognized for her creative talents and has received multiple creative works awards for her choreographic pieces from the California Arts Council, Diablo Regional Arts Association, Zellerbach Family Foundation and Dean and Margaret Lesher Foundation since 2000. In 1998, the company established it's Annual International Artist in Residence Program for a month of performances and workshops to provide professional development for the company, enrichment for our students and to the Bay Area Flamenco community.
